A successful launch depends on completing key configurations for products, payments, and store settings before your first visitor arrives. This checklist walks through the essential setup, content, and testing stages to ensure your store is ready for business from day one.

## What foundational settings should you configure first?

Before adding products, lock in the core details that define your business operations. These settings include your store's name, legal address, operating currency, and default units for weight and dimensions.

In your Shopify admin, you can set your store name, legal business name, and address. According to [Gokwik](https://www.gokwik.co/blog/how-to-set-up-shopify-store-before-launch?_gc=1), Shopify uses this address to help calculate tax rates. In your admin settings, you will also set your store currency. This choice can only be made once, so select it based on your primary market. Finally, connect your custom domain to establish your brand and build trust with shoppers.

## How should you prepare your products, content, and theme?

Your products and the content that describes them are the core of your store. Each product listing should be complete and optimized before you launch.

A complete product page includes:

- **A clear title:** Use words your customers search for. Keep titles direct and descriptive.
- **High-quality images:** Use several images for each product, showing different angles and details. Images should have a consistent background and aspect ratio to create a professional look. For best results with zoom features, Shopify recommends images with a minimum resolution of 2,048 pixels on the longest side.
- **Complete variant details:** If your products come in different sizes or colors, ensure each variant has the correct price, SKU, and inventory count. Tracking inventory for each variant helps avoid selling stock you do not have.
- **Organization:** Assign each product to at least one collection so customers can find it through your store's navigation. Products not in a collection are difficult for customers to discover.

Before making significant changes to your store's design, it is good practice to create a backup of your theme. You can learn more in our guide on how to back up a Shopify theme before you edit it.

To duplicate a theme for a backup:

1. Find the theme you want to back up, click the horizontal menu button, and then click **Duplicate**.
2. The new copy, named "Copy Of" followed by the original theme's name, will appear on the Themes page.

## What legal policies and contact information do you need?

Store policies build trust with customers and are legally required in many regions. Shopify provides a dedicated area in your admin to add your refund policy, privacy policy, terms of service, and shipping policy.

Shopify offers templates to get you started, but you are responsible for ensuring the content of your published policies matches your actual business practices. According to [Eseospace](https://eseospace.com/blog/shopify-store-policies), for example, a template might suggest a returns window that differs from what your business can support. Always review and edit templates carefully.

Under the Shopify Terms of Service, you must also provide public and easy-to-find contact information. According to [Eseospace](https://eseospace.com/blog/shopify-store-policies), this includes your business name, an email address, a phone number, and the physical address of your business. A dedicated contact page linked in your store's footer is a standard way to meet this requirement.

## How do you set up payments, shipping, and taxes?

Before you can accept an order, you must activate a payment provider. From your admin's payment settings, you can activate Shopify Payments or add other payment methods like PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

Next, configure your shipping settings in your Shopify admin. According to [Gokwik](https://www.gokwik.co/blog/how-to-set-up-shopify-store-before-launch?_gc=1), here you will define your shipping zones, create shipping rates, and set any thresholds for free shipping. If you use carrier-calculated rates, ensure every product has an accurate weight to avoid incorrect shipping charges at checkout.

Finally, review your tax settings in your Shopify admin. According to [Gokwik](https://www.gokwik.co/blog/how-to-set-up-shopify-store-before-launch?_gc=1), Shopify uses your store address and shipping zones to help automate tax collection, but it is your responsibility to ensure you are collecting the correct amount of tax for all regions where you have a business presence.

## How should you test your store before launching?

A thorough quality assurance (QA) pass catches issues before your customers do. The most effective test is to walk through the entire customer journey yourself, from browsing to checkout.

Use an incognito browser window on a mobile device and a desktop computer to simulate the experience of a new visitor.

- Click every link in your navigation, header, and footer to check for broken links.
- Add products to the cart and complete a purchase. You can use Shopify's test mode to simulate a transaction without a real credit card.
- Verify that you receive an order confirmation email and that the order appears correctly in your Shopify admin.
- Check for any placeholder text or demo content from your theme that needs to be replaced.
- Test your site's loading speed. Large images are a common cause of slow pages.

For more extensive testing, you can create a development store, which is a testing environment that mirrors a live Shopify store without affecting any real customers. ([Dev stores](https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/stores/development-stores))

## How do you officially launch your store?

Once you have completed all the checks and are confident the store is ready, the final step is to remove the password protection.

In your Shopify admin, navigate to your online store's preferences. According to [Gokwik](https://www.gokwik.co/blog/how-to-set-up-shopify-store-before-launch?_gc=1), scroll to the Password protection section, uncheck the Enable password box, and click Save. Your store is now live and accessible to the public.
