# See who made a change, and how sure Actorly is

Actorly shows who made a product change when Shopify reports it, and always shows how sure it is: **Likely**, **Possible**, **Unknown**, **Not attributed yet** or **Investigating**. It gets a name by matching Shopify's own activity log against the change by time. That is a correlation, and Actorly shows it as one: the name never appears without its word. Where Shopify records nobody, Actorly says Unknown, and it never fills Unknown in later.

## How do I see who made a change?

1 **Open Changes.** Choose **Changes** in the app's menu.

2 **Look at the Who column.** Each row shows a name with a confidence word beside it, or **Unknown**, or **Not attributed yet**. Unknown, Not attributed yet and Investigating carry no name.

3 **Choose View for the detail.** The **Who** panel explains the word in plain language and says how Actorly reached it.

Who and How Actorly learned of it. Here Shopify sent a notice about the change.

4 **Filter by person or app.** In Changes, use the **Who** filter, then **Name**. See [Search and filter your changes](https://actorly.app/docs/find-what-changed/search-and-filters).

## How does Actorly work out who made a change?

Actorly takes a name only from Shopify's activity log, never from the change notice itself. So it works in three parts.

1 **It finds what changed.** Actorly reads the record again, so the "what" comes from its own before and after copies.

2 **It reads Shopify's activity log.** The log says an action happened to a record at a time, and often names a staff member or an app.

3 **It lines the two up.** It looks for an activity-log entry for the same record that sits close in time to the change.

What it finds decides the word it shows.

What Actorly foundThe word

Exactly one matching entry, and it names someone**Likely**, with that name

Several entries, all naming the same person or app**Possible**, with that name

Several entries naming different people or apps**Not attributed yet**. Actorly does not pick the nearest and does not guess.

No entry yet**Not attributed yet**. If the check finds no one by the date the Who panel shows, it becomes Unknown.

Shopify records nobody for that kind of record**Unknown** at once, with nothing to wait for

Matching is a correlation by record and time, not a hard link, and Actorly never presents it as more.

## What do the five answers mean?

These are the words the app uses, with its own explanations.

WordWhat it means

Likely"An entry in Shopify's activity log matched this change closely in time. Actorly did not see who did it."

Possible"An entry in Shopify's activity log was near this change in time. The match is weak."

Unknown"Shopify does not record who made this change. This will not change later."

Not attributed yet"Actorly is checking Shopify's activity log for who made this change." If the check finds no one by the date shown, this changes to Unknown and stays that way.

Investigating"Actorly is still reading Shopify's activity log for the period this change falls in, because it holds more entries than one check can read. It keeps trying and updates this when it has read it."

Not attributed yet and Investigating are waiting states, not answers. Unknown is permanent.

## Who can appear in the Who column?

- **A staff member**, as "Staff member: Jordan O. (Likely)", by the name Shopify gives. Shopify gives a display name only, never a staff ID, and it never says whether that person is the store owner. Two people who share a name look identical to Actorly. That is a limit in Shopify, not work Actorly has left to do.
- **An app**, by its name. Actorly cannot see who used the app. If Shopify's entry gives no app name, Actorly shows no name for it.
- **Shopify**, when an entry names neither a person nor an app: the Who panel says "Shopify's activity log shows Shopify itself made this change, as a scheduled or automatic action."
- **Unknown**, **Not attributed yet** or **Investigating**, with no name.

## For which changes does Actorly say who?

The public claim is for product changes, and then only when Shopify reports it. For other kinds a name may be shown with Possible or Likely. Where Shopify records nobody at all for a kind, such as inventory, themes, shipping profiles, locations, markets or store settings, Actorly can tell you what changed and when, but not who, and the change is Unknown from the start.

The Who panel says which case applies to the kind you are looking at: "...in some cases." or "...does not name who made a change." The **What Actorly watches** table has a **Who changed it** column, and it does not give the same answer for every kind. It says **When Shopify says** for products, **Not possible** for the kinds where Shopify records nobody, and **Not yet** for variants, collections, customers, draft orders, blogs, articles, pages, orders and discounts. **Not yet** is the claim Actorly makes in that table, not a sign that it does not look: for those kinds Actorly already reads Shopify's activity log and shows the matched name with its word.

A deletion that Actorly finds on a routine check, rather than from a Shopify notice, is Unknown at once.

Actorly has no before-and-after values for changes made before it was installed, and cannot put those values back.

## Where else do names appear?

- **Overview, With a named actor.** Changes where Shopify's activity log let Actorly match a person or app, "at any confidence". The other changes have no named actor: Unknown, or Not attributed yet while Actorly is still checking.
- **Overview, Who is making changes.** Names with their confidence words, and how many changes have no named actor. That count covers Unknown, which never changes, and Not attributed yet, which may.
- **Changes filters.** **Who**, **Name** and **Confidence**.
- **Exports.** An export carries the actor and how sure Actorly is about the person, together.

## If something goes wrong

- **A name looks wrong.** A name is a match against the activity log, not proof. Two people sharing a name look identical, and Possible means the match is weak. Actorly shows the match and its confidence word. It cannot correct a name.
- **A change says Unknown and you made it yourself.** The kind may be one Shopify records nobody for, nothing may have matched by the deadline, two different people or apps may have edited the same record close together (Actorly never guesses), or a deletion was found by a routine check rather than a Shopify notice. See [Why a change says Unknown or Not attributed yet](https://actorly.app/docs/see-who-made-a-change/why-it-says-unknown).
- **A row stays Investigating.** Shopify holds more entries for that period than one check can read. Actorly keeps trying and updates the row when it has read them.

## A worked example

Sample, five changes to "Example tee" on the same day:

- Staff member: Jordan O. (Likely): one activity-log entry for the product sat close in time to the change and named Jordan.
- Staff member: Jordan O. (Possible): several entries for the product were near the change, all naming Jordan, so Actorly knows he was working on it, not that this exact edit was his.
- Not attributed yet: two entries named different staff members, so Actorly did not choose, and the row waits.
- Unknown: nothing matched by the deadline in the Who panel, and the row stays Unknown.
- A location rename also reads Unknown from the start, because Shopify records nobody for locations.

Each row says only what Actorly can show: a match with its word, or nothing. None says why the edit was made.

## Is it the same on both plans?

Yes. Who made a change works the same on Actorly Watch and Actorly Restore, permanently. Seeing is free.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Actorly guess who made a change?

No. It shows a name only when an entry in Shopify's activity log lines up with the change, and says how sure it is. When it cannot, it says Unknown.

### Why does a change say Not attributed yet?

Actorly is still checking Shopify's activity log. If it finds no one by the date the Who panel shows, the change becomes Unknown and stays that way. See [Why a change says Unknown or Not attributed yet](https://actorly.app/docs/see-who-made-a-change/why-it-says-unknown).

### Can I see who changed my inventory or my theme?

No. Shopify does not record who made those changes, so Actorly shows what changed and when, with Unknown for who.

### Can I tell which staff member it was if two share a name?

No. Shopify gives a display name only, so two people with the same name look identical to Actorly.

### Can I search for a staff member's name?

Not in the search box. Use the **Who** filter, then **Name**.

### Does Actorly Restore show more names than Actorly Watch?

No. Who made a change is identical on both plans.

### Does Actorly show everything my staff did?

No. Actorly matches Shopify's activity log to changes by time and shows how sure the match is. It cannot see everything, and the [What Actorly records](https://actorly.app/docs/get-set-up/what-actorly-watches) table lists what it cannot.

### What if Shopify does not name the app?

Actorly shows no name for it. The change stays Not attributed yet while Actorly is checking and becomes Unknown at the deadline. Actorly cannot see who used an app.
