A price lives on the variant.
A Shopify product can have variants, such as sizes or colors, and the price sits on the variant. So the edit you remember as "I changed the price of that shirt" can be several variant edits. That matters when you go looking for the history: you are looking for variant changes, not only product changes.
Actorly records variants separately from the product, so a price change shows on its own rather than as a change to the whole product. For a variant it records price, compare-at price, SKU, barcode, weight and inventory policy, with the value before and after each change.
What Actorly claims about a price, and what it does not.
| Topic | What Actorly shows | What it does not claim |
|---|---|---|
| History | The old price, the new price and the time, when Shopify reports the variant change. | Every variant change appearing at once. |
| Who | Shopify's activity log may name the person, app or channel behind an action, and you can look there. | A name for a variant price change. Actorly's public claim about who is for product changes. |
| Put it back | A variant's price, on Actorly Restore, one variant at a time. | A bulk price restore, or a restore to a date. |
Shopify reports a variant change through its product's update, so Actorly records it then. If that notice is missed, the weekly check finds the change instead, up to a week later and with no name attached.
Putting a price back.
A variant price restore writes that variant's price only. A market price fixed to an amount is not touched; one set as a percentage is worked out from this price and so moves with it. The compare-at price is not changed. Actorly tells you this before you confirm.
Like every restore it checks first, asks you to confirm the exact value, writes it, then asks Shopify again to confirm the value took. Putting a variant's price back is paid-plan only; the free plan's one restore a month covers twelve other fields.
Price lists and markets.
Actorly also records price lists: the name, currency and any percentage-based adjustment for every price list, including the ones Markets or B2B pricing set up. A percentage adjustment moves every price in that list at once, so a small change here can reprice a whole market. Shopify sends no alert when a price list changes, so Actorly finds it on a scheduled check, weekly on Watch and daily on Restore. Shopify does not record who changed a price list.
What this is not.
If you are looking for a lowest-price notice shown to shoppers, such as an EU Omnibus price display, Actorly does not do that. It puts nothing on your storefront. It is also not an analytics tool: it holds no sales data and makes no statement about revenue or conversion.
The record starts the day Actorly is installed. It cannot show what your store looked like before that.
Seeing is free. Actorly Watch costs $0 and keeps three months of change history and one restore a month. Actorly Restore is $29 a month or $240 a year, with unlimited history while you stay on Restore, unlimited single-field restores and export. Shopify bills it on your usual invoice, never per change. There is no trial: Watch is the free plan, with no clock. See pricing.
Questions.
Can I see the old price of a Shopify variant?
Yes, from the day Actorly is installed: each recorded change shows the price before and after, with the time. The record starts the day Actorly is installed. It cannot show what your store looked like before that.
Can Actorly tell me who changed a price?
Not for a variant price. Actorly's public claim about who made a change is for product changes, when Shopify reports it. For a variant it shows the old value, the new value and the time, and does not promise a name.
Is a price change a product change or a variant change?
A variant change, because the price sits on the variant. Actorly records the two separately.
Does restoring a price change my market prices?
A market price fixed to an amount is not touched. One set as a percentage is worked out from this price and so moves with it. The compare-at price is not changed.
Can I put a price back on the free plan?
No. Putting a variant's price back is a Restore plan feature. The free plan's one restore a month covers twelve other fields, such as a product's title or description.
How soon does a price change appear?
When Shopify notifies Actorly of the variant change, Actorly reads the record again and records it. No delay figure is quoted. If a notice is missed, the weekly check finds the change, up to a week later and with no name attached.
