See one product's full history

To see everything that has happened to one product, open any change to it and choose All changes to this record, or open the product in the Data room and read what has changed, field by field. The first route lists every recorded change to the product, with its before and after value, in Changes. The second shows each field's value now and how many times it changed. The same two routes work for a collection, a theme or any other record Actorly records.

What do I need before I start?

The product must be one Actorly records, and the change must be one Actorly recorded. Actorly has no before-and-after values for changes made before it was installed, and cannot put those values back. How far back you can see also depends on your plan: 3 months on Actorly Watch, unlimited on Actorly Restore.

How do I see a product's history from a change?

Use this route when you already know one change you care about.

1Open Changes. Choose Changes in the app's menu.
2Find a change to the product. Search for its name, or filter by Resource. See Search and filter your changes.
3Choose View. The change window opens, headed with the product's name.
4Choose All changes to this record. It is a link at the top of the window and shows how many changes there are, for example "All changes to this record (2)". The page then reads History of and the product's name.
5Read the list. The table lists every recorded change to that product, ordered by when Shopify says it happened, with View on each row for the before and after.

The change window also has its own section, History of this record, which lists the five most recent earlier changes and counts up to "50+". It says "Recorded since {date}. First version: created." or "install snapshot", and See all changes to this record opens the full list.

How do I see a product's history from the Data room?

Use this route when you want to start from the product rather than from a change.

1Open the Data room. Choose Data room in the app's menu, then the card for Products.
2Find the product. Use the search box, or the Changes filter set to Has changes.
The Products list in the Data room: Name, Actorly, Status, Changes and Last seen, with a View button
The top of the Products list. The Actorly column says Tracked, and Status is the product status. A development store.
3Choose View. A window opens over the list with every field Actorly stores and the history behind each value.
4Read What has changed. Each row is a field that has changed, with its value before and after and a line such as "Changed 3 times, most recently" a date.
The What has changed table of one product: Field, What changed and History for Description and Tags
The top of an item window: one row for each field that has changed, with the count and the latest date. Only two rows are shown. A development store.
5Read Everything else Actorly holds. These are the fields that have not changed since Actorly started recording them.

How do I read what I find?

Each row in the Changes history is one change: what changed, when, who made it with how sure Actorly is, and a View button for the before and after. Variants are recorded separately from products, so a price change shows on the variant's own history, not on the product's. Open the Variants card in the Data room to find it.

In the Data room window, a record that was already there when Actorly first recorded it carries one line above its tables: "Actorly first recorded this on {date}. The values were already set before then, and Actorly cannot tell for how long." A product created while Actorly was watching says "Created on {date}, while Actorly was watching."

If something goes wrong

  • "We could not load this change. Try again." Choose Try again in the change window.
  • The history looks short. Check whether the product's kind is still importing: the Data room kind page says "Actorly is still importing these, so this list will grow", and the change window says "Actorly is still reading your store" and "Not seeing a change here does not mean it did not happen." See Is Actorly recording my store?.
  • A date range hides older changes. The Changes list opens on Last 30 days. Choose All time to see the rest.
  • A deleted product. Its history stays. See Find a deleted product or other item.

A worked example

Sample: "Example tee" was created, had its description changed twice and its price changed once. In the Data room under Products it shows Changes 3. In its Data room window, What has changed lists Description, changed 2 times, and the product's own fields. The price is on the Variants card, under the variant. In Changes, choose View on any row and then All changes to this record: three rows, newest first. The two description changes open to a before and after. The creation opens to "The whole record was created, so there are no field-by-field changes." The Who column shows a confidence word or Unknown for each.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the history start on a particular date?

That is the day Actorly started recording this record. Values already set then are shown, but Actorly cannot tell for how long they had been set.

Why is a variant's price change not on the product?

Variants are recorded separately from products, so a price change shows on the variant's own history.

Can I see a deleted product's history?

Yes. Deleted items are kept with their last recorded values.

Can I put an old value back from the history?

Open the change and choose Restore this value, for fields Actorly can put back. See Restore one field to an earlier value.

How many changes can the history count?

The change window counts up to "50+" and lists the five most recent. All changes to this record opens the full list in Changes.
